The Students from Pumwani

This film is a two part series of 28 mins each about Thomas and Stellah who are classmates and about to finish secondary school. Like young people anywhere they are preoccupied with exams, friends, love and plans for the future. But Stellah and Thomas live in Pumwani, a poor slum area on the outskirts of Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. Two thirds of the 60,000 people live far below the poverty line, 12% of the population are infected with HIV and 5,000 have been orphaned by the disease. This thought provoking film shows the harsh realities of student life in a less economically developed country. It focuses on growing up, poverty and hardship and helps us to understand why young Africans risk their lives to reach the lands of opportunities.
