Tintagel is a dramatic example of the way the English reacted to the end of Roman occupation. They retreated to the hill-forts not occupied for four centuries. The power vacuum that ensued made the hill-fort the safe place to be and historian Charles Thomas shows just why Tintagel was a perfect example. If hill-forts illustrate the chaos of the post Roman power vacuum and the anarchy that followed, it is to the church and there grave-yards that Chris goes to tell the story of the eventual triumph of the Saxon warriors. We visit the Somerset Levels to look for evidence in the landscape of the emerging Kingdom of Wessex under Alfred the Great and his ultimate triumph over Viking warlords. The end of the conflict is Alfred’s genius put to the test in Athelney and the beginnings of the founding of a nation in the modest church on The Somerset Levels at Aller.
